Supporting growing demand for sustainable packaging alternatives, Coveris has teamed up with Austrian paper manufacturer, Brigl & Bergmeister to deliver their latest innovation, PaperBarrier Seal.

This fully recyclable, sustainably sourced packaging material offers the same functionality and product safety as existing packaging alternatives, whilst minimising both packaging and product waste in support of the manufacturers leading NO WASTE strategy. PaperBarrier Seal will be exclusively launching at Fachpack 2021, where both companies’ experts will be available to share details of this unique partnership.

“With the launch of PaperBarrier Seal, Coveris expands its portfolio to another sustainable packaging alternative applicable for a wide variety of dried fruits, cereals, sweets, snacks and even chocolate products. This new development was also a logical step in Coveris’ NO WASTE strategy, which focuses on eliminating product waste from production and operations, enforcing recycling and second life approaches”, explains Jakob A. Mosser, CEO of Coveris Group.

Selecting a more sustainable packaging alternative

Visitors at FachPack 2021 can experience first-hand the innovative paper-based packaging material, made unique by its special paper coating which enables sealability whilst still remaining fully recyclable in existing paper streams. The material is available in three versions offering different barrier properties, including moisture, oxygen, grease, and mineral oils. Offering the same product protection as plastic alternatives, PaperBarrier Seal additionally ensures comparable production efficiencies as standard packaging solutions.

“Thanks to the support of our colleagues at Coveris’ Pack Innovation Centre in Halle, we successfully tested the new paper material on standard VFFS and HFFS packaging lines and confirmed a production speed up to 200 products per minute. This proves that the new PaperBarrier Seal solution can add real value to food brands looking for sustainable packaging alternatives that boost their product visibility on the shelves”, added Bernhard Mumelter, Group Innovation Manager at Coveris.

Finding the right partner is key

The product development of PaperBarrier Seal has taken over two years to deliver due to extensive validation and testing, requiring a very close and transparent partnership between Coveris and Brigl & Bergmeister. Now ready to launch at FachPack 2021, both sides agree that the results exceeded their expectations and will revolutionise the food market in Europe.

“We are extremely proud of our latest invention and believe that PaperBarrier Seal is the optimal packaging solution that food brands have been waiting for years. It wouldn’t be possible to achieve this success in such a short time without the combination of paper and converting know-how of both companies, which should be a good practice for future developments”, summarised Thomas Fabian, Director Global Business Development at Brigl & Bergmeister.
