Leading European packaging manufacturer Coveris is gearing up to showcase a host of next generation, sustainable packaging innovations at September’s Lunch show in London. With a focus on recyclability, plastic reduction and new ways of eating, here’s an exclusive preview of the new products and insights they will be featuring at the event. 

With the entire food-to-go industry culminating under one roof on Thursday 19th and Friday 20th September 2019 at ExCeL London, Coveris will be joining the line-up to showcase its latest product innovations and discuss how its Pack Positive® strategy is set to deliver tomorrow’s food-to-go and takeaway packaging of the future.

As one of the UK’s fastest growing retail food channels operating in the most challenging environmental climate of recent years, the demand for food-to-go packaging solutions that protect both the product and the environment, as well as supporting new and innovative ways of ordering and consuming food, mean that the sector provides one of the most exciting packaging development opportunities in the industry.

Responsible for the manufacture of plastic, paper and cartonboard packaging solutions, Coveris is in a unique industry position to serve the complex and evolving packaging needs of the food-to-go sector through its multi-format and hybrid packaging offer. Providing an exclusive insight into their sustainable development journey for the future, the manufacturer discusses what you can expect to see from them at this year’s Lunch show.


Pack Positive® 2022 roadmap to recyclability 

Recognised as the packaging format of choice for the retail sandwich and wrap sector, laminate cartonboard solutions have dominated the food-to-go fixture for almost a decade due to their lightweight functionality and most importantly, ability to meet the protective and atmospheric demands of a short-shelf life, freshly packed product.

Whilst these packs are considered ‘widely recyclable’ under current OPRL guidelines, this is all set to change in 2022 given the government focus on a circular economy and the recent publication of the WRAP and CPI paper and board packaging recyclability guidelines. As the UK’s leading manufacturer of laminate sandwich and wrap packs, producing over 550 million packs a year, Coveris recognises its responsibility to drive the recyclable packaging technology of the future.

Setting out its development strategy in its 2022 roadmap to recyclability, the manufacturer will be discussing how it will meet 2022 guidelines, including the reduction of plastic laminate weighting. With the recommendation for plastic attached to any paper or board packaging to be optimised to a laminate content less than or equal to 5% of pack weight, the manufacturer will also be advising on how to minimise any impact of potential modulated fees on alternative materials and formats to support increased recyclability costs. Having already launched its Recyclapeel separable solution to meet the guideline requirement for peelable liners and windows detachable by the consumer, or during the recycling process, the technology featured across selected Waitrose sandwich packs can be found at the show or instore. 


Award winning, sustainable results

Having recently been awarded a Sammie at The British Sandwich and Food to Go Industry Awards for its M&S sushi packs, which use 35% less plastic and reduce packaging weight by more than 30%, Coveris will be showcasing its reduced plastic formats and recyclable alternatives to more traditional all-rigid and black plastic formats.

Supported by its dedicated Pack Positive® Centre in Leeds, which has also recently been shortlisted for Investment Project of the Year at this year’s UK Packaging Awards, the facility is the driving force behind Coveris’ sustainable product development strategy to deliver 100% recyclable packaging by 2025.

Hot packaging for hot eats

Product innovation, street food trends and changing tastes mean that food-to-go no longer just belongs in the fridge. Launching at Lunch, Coveris’ dual-ovenable, fully printed, HEAT range has been expertly crafted to withstand temperatures up to 220°C and provide added heat protection and easy-to-eat functionality for products including burritos, tacos, wraps, flatbreads and pastries. 


Reshaping restaurant takeaway

Takeaway is changing and so is packaging. Exclusive to Lunch, Coveris will be previewing its nextgen Contora range for restaurant takeaway and quick serve restaurants (QSR). With digital technology and product innovation changing the way we order, takeaway food is ordinarily consumed within 15 to 30 mins of being served, therefore maintaining quality from packing through to consumption, and even reuse, is fundamental.

Combining innovative design concepts with functional performance, including heat retention technology, the new range works both inside and out. Providing a zero plastic, environmental solution for today’s consumer, the packs are 100% recyclable and sustainably sourced board.
