Coveris has been awarded Cartonboard Pack of the Year at the UK Packaging Awards 2022. The prestigious cartonboard prize recognises Coveris’ innovative RecyclaPaper sandwich skillet, a fully paper-based solution for the food-to-go sector.

Celebrating achievements and innovative packaging, people and businesses, the flagship UK Packaging Awards ceremony was hosted on Wednesday 19th October at Grosvenor House, London. Coveris was revealed as the winner of Cartonboard Pack of the Year for its forward-thinking RecyclaPaper solution for food-on-the-move. Demonstrating a commitment to sustainable packaging advancement in the sector, Coveris received the same award in 2020 for its lightweight sandwich skillet innovation, RecyclaLite.

RecyclaPaper is a fully paper-based, sustainably sourced and recyclable sandwich skillet. Featuring a translucent paper window enabling product visibility, Coveris’ RecyclaPaper skillet offers an alternative to plastic or bio-based film lined formats. Developed with the latest paper monomaterial technology, RecyclaPaper delivers the same product protection, robust packaging performance, packing speeds and importantly in the fight against food waste, comparable shelf life and freshness benefits as Coveris’ existing sandwich packaging.

Supporting Coveris’ sustainability vision of No Waste, almost full fibre recovery is achieved during recycling of RecyclaPaper, with both core components of the sandwich skillet from a monomaterial, renewable paper source.

Alongside food-to-go manufacturer Around Noon, Coveris’ RecyclaPaper sandwich skillet launched at a major UK sporting event in 2021 and featured again at this year’s competition.

Will Mercer, Coveris’ Business Unit Paper R&D Director said: “We are very proud Coveris has once again been awarded Cartonboard Pack of the Year at the UK Packaging Awards, this time for our innovative RecyclaPaper sandwich skillet. Coveris is committed to the development of pioneering food-on-the-move packaging, and it is recognition for the dedication of our colleagues, customers and partners in the supply chain as we strive to a more sustainable future.”

The UK Packaging Awards Innovation of the Year prize was awarded to Notpla‘s compostable takeaway box, manufactured in partnership with Coveris. Sustainable start-up Notpla teamed up with Coveris to have them manufacture a range of printed, biodegradable and recyclable food cartons using Notpla’s award-winning, seaweed-based barrier coating technology.
