Ben Anthony, who works at Coveris Spalding (UK), our specialist linerless labels site, is completing a three-year City & Guilds Level 3 apprenticeship in maintenance engineering and recently added to his responsibilities by joining the ASI (Area Safety Inspection) team. Thanks to Ben for giving us an insight into the first year of his apprenticeship and what’s involved in his qualification in this interview.

“Ben is a valuable member of our engineering team and has great CAN-DO attitude, always willing to learn and improve.”

Jamie Teft, CPS Coordinator

Why did you apply to Coveris for your apprenticeship?

After leaving school I was working in a supermarket and considering my career options, but I was interested in engineering and looking for an apprenticeship. Someone I knew suggested Coveris, so I did some research and got in contact.

How have you found the first year of the course?

I’ve really enjoyed my first year of the course, it’s been interesting and kept me on my toes as I’m always learning more and more, whether that’s at work or college.

What does a typical shift involve?

Each day is different! Typically, there is planned maintenance (TPM) to complete but you never know what you’re walking into at the start of a shift. There can be no new problems to attend to or they can range from a small air leak which can be sorted in minutes to a gearbox change. There’s a lot of problem solving which I really enjoy.

What do you enjoy most about the apprenticeship?

I like the people and the working environment at Coveris as everyone is approachable. This, with the variety of work, makes it a good place to be.

Is working in the packaging industry what you expected?

I didn’t really know what to expect coming into it. When I had my interview and a tour of the factory, the machinery and its size was an eye-opener, and I knew there would be lots to learn.

What are your interests outside of work?

Outside of work I like a range of sports but mostly football; I enjoy going to Tottenham Hotspur games when I can and going to watch Boston United now and again.

Thanks for sharing your experiences Ben, and good luck with your apprenticeship. Interested in career opportunities at Coveris? Visit coveris.com/careers/join-the-team.
