Part of an investment programme to advance linerless capabilities, which began in late 2022, the latest spend brings the total investment at the site to £2.5M.
Home to the UK’s only dedicated linerless label manufacturing facility, Coveris Spalding manufactures over one billion labels annually for the UK and European FMCG sectors. This latest investment in a new ten-colour MPS flexographic press, which became operational in June 2025, expands the site’s capacity to meet rising UK demand and supports strategic growth into new wide-web markets such as ready meals and food-on-the-go.
Designed to print on both paper and filmic substrates, the new press enables Coveris to offer sustainable labelling solutions aligned with its No Waste vision. The advanced MPS technology features E-Sleeve print capabilities for enhanced accuracy, reduced waste and faster set-up times. Additionally, the press incorporates 100% web inspection for improved quality and consistency, as well as cold foil embellishment, enabling decorative, high impact finishes across Coveris’ full range of linerless formats.
Compatible with core applications including Slidewrap™, c-wrap, envelope, punnet labels and contour-fitted formats for Skinpack solutions, the new press supports increased output while maintaining exceptional print quality and technical performance.
Commenting on the investment, Nigel Hewitt, Coveris’ BU Paper Sales Director comments: “This latest investment represents another key milestone in our journey to deliver world-class linerless solutions from our Linerless Centre of Excellence. As demand continues to grow across traditional applications and newer categories like ready meals, our expanded capacity and technical capability ensure we remain the partner of choice for sustainable labelling innovation.”
Linerless labels offer a more sustainable alternative to traditional self-adhesive formats, eliminating the need for carrier backing paper. This results in a weight reduction of up to 40% more labels per reel, less waste and fewer machine changeovers. Premium formats such as Slidewrap™ and envelope labels also deliver a downgauged alternative to cartonboard sleeves, combining shelf appeal with sustainability for brands seeking to reduce packaging weight without compromising visual impact.
Developed for compatibility with Ravenwood Packaging equipment, Coveris’ linerless range continues to set the industry benchmark for functional, attractive and sustainable labelling.
